The 6th July 1901 saw the opening of the first course at Turnberry. An immediate success and designed by the great Willie Fernie, it was the longest in the west of Scotland, with a total distance of 6248 yards. Turnberry’s “Duel in the Sun” of 1977 reminds us of that incredible battle of wit and skill between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, which remains etched in the minds of golfers the world over.
